SALVATION ARMY.

WELCOME TO MAJOR HAINES. A; very hearty and warm welcome was extended to . Major Haines, the new Di-" visional Commander for Dunedin, and Mrs Haines, in the Salvation Army Fortress, Dowling street, last evening. The attendance was quite sufficient to fill the downstair portion of the building, large as it is, and the proceedings quickly took a most enthusiastic form. The meeting was presided over by Colonel MTnnes, tho chief • secretary, who spoke very briefly at the opening. He announced that tho Mayor of Dunedin (Mr J. S. Douglas) was present' with them and invited him to address those present. The Mayor expressed his pleasure at being, with them on such an occasion, , and said it was always a gratification to him to accept an invitation to attend a. meeting of the Army. He had on several other occasions referred to the good work the Salvation Army was doing, and there wus no need for him to repeat that. He congratulated 'the Army on having in Dunedin such an officer as Major Haines. In the name of the citizens he extended a hearty welcome to that gentleman, and to Mrs' Haines, and mentioned that , tho work of the Army was looked upon os one of the greatest social works going forward in Dunedin. Envoy Hughson, who was described by Colonel MTnnes as one of the old standbys, on behalf of himself and the corps, warmly welcomed Major and Mrs Haines, and was followed by Bandmaster Gould, Captain Newton, and others, who spoke in a similar strain. The band, which seemed to have been considerably, augmented, played several selections in a highly creditable manner, and vocal solos were contributed by Captain Carmichael and others. Thq, proceedings were entirely free of all stiffness and, formality, the outstanding feature being the warmth, cordiality-, and enthusiasm of the, reception accorded to Major and Mrs Haines.
