From a labourer in. tho steel mills to a power in tho financial world is the feat accomplished overnight by Conway Tearle as Bill Matthews in “The Road of Ambition,” the new Solznick picture, which will bo one of the feature attractions at the Octagon Theatre to-night. , The story, which is by Elaine Sterne, is that of a yourig man, who, through an invention for the betterment of steel output, is lifted from sordid surroundings to a world in which He becomes a great power. He has phenomenal success with every venture ho embarks upon, but finds himself handicapped by lack of tho fineness and polish of the; people with whom ho associates. Ho is educated and introduced into society by a young woman of one of the best families, who is in need of money. In spite of having riche's Bill finds himself unhappy because of his inability to win the love of tho girl ho adores. However, she,marries him to save her father from financial ruin, tolling him frankly that she does not love him. But in the end she his true worth, and grows to return his affection. Tho second film is entitled “The Man Tamer,” and features Gladys Walton in her latest Universal photo-drama. The story concerns a circus girl who attempts to run an animal act in a circus when her father suddenly dies, leaving her alone to battle with the world. _ The circus owner tries to force his attentions upon her, and on her refusal to have anything to do with him, she is discharged. How she struggles along and then marries the son of a millionaire gives the story a fascinating effect. The supporting programme is a varied one. The Octagon orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr Caulton, renders music of its usual high standard.
