.JUMPS FROM A TRAIN. A prisoner 'named William Herbert Chapman, who was being transferred from Dunedin to Paparoa, managed to elude the custody of the constable- who was escorting him when the train was near Ashburton on Tuesday, and jumped from the train. Chap-, man, who complained of ill-health while in custody at Dunedin, was under 4 a sentence of six months’ imprisonment for the theft of a bicycle and an overcoat. A prisoner escaped from the north-bound express yesterday at about 3.40 p.m. while the train was stationary near Ashburton. Cemetery. The escapee was last heard of at 5 o’clock yesterday, when he was inquiring for clothes and a bicycle a mile from the railway. The police are still searching, but have not revealed the identity of the prisoner, who was recently sentenced at Dunedin end was proceeding in the custody of a single constable to Paparoa Prison. The escapee is described as of fight build, height Sft Gin. and unshaven.
