BOWLING

By Jack. Thanks to the mild winter, the majority of the greens in the Dunedin Centre are in a forward state, and they should be in fine condition when the season opens in October. Meanwhile the activities of members, or at least those of them who are cueists, are confined to the billiard competitions. which have proved a big attraction iluring the winter months. Taieri boat Bahnacewen at! billiard? by 112 points, Howard's line play being responsible for the win. Scores (Balmacewen names first): Fergusrtu 42, Cheylte 96: Watson 144, Murray 76; Fhinn 105, Kirkland 126; Owen 104, Stevenson 90: Buchan 56, Millar 90; Wright 78, Howard 219; Omand 81, Leith 58; Nisbot 70, Gilligan 37. Kaikorai beat Caversham by 103 points. A. Lindsay has won the billiard championship of Caledonian Chib. He defeated T. Isaac in the final game after a good contest, the loser making several good breaks. “ It's a' disgrace to humanity and onr civilisation,” stated Air J. Pearce at the annual meeting of the Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club, when the question of Sunday play was being considered, "to see the number of people who come here to play tennis on Sundays.” ■ The following is the chorus with which the New Zealanders greet their brother bowlers on the various greens in the British Isles; British bowlers, now* we greet you; British bowlers, pleased to meet you; We may lose op wo may best you, As wo go bowling on. At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Anderson’s Bay Bowling Club it was decided to invite the lady supporters of the club to meet the committee at an early date in order* to discuss the conditions under which the lady members of the club will be granted the use of the green. There should really be no difficulty in this respect, os four other clubs in the centre have lady members, and there appears to bo,no lack of harmony in any of these clubs. ' NEW ZEALANDERS’ TOUR. The visitors won the jack, and early on had established a good lead, which they maintained until tho end, running out winners by 23 points. J GOOD WIN AT C A 10)181'. In the match against Ponhill and Ponylan at Cardiff the New Zealanders quickly got accustomed to the green, and at tho nfth end there was not a lot ot difference in tho scores',' which road 32—27 in favour of the homo team. The remarkable featiuo, however, was that the throe Penylun rinks were fairly well ahead. On ono rink the visitors counted five at the first head, and lod 10 —1 at the fifth. Fortunes fluctuated, and at the tenth the home players were behind on the aggregate 64—50. The score at the fifteenth end was 93 —87 in favour of the locals. From then on the New Zealand bowlers asserted themselves on a" few rinks, and their strong finish made victory a certainty. For the most part tho "drawing” game was favoured, but an occasional drive made it abundantly clear that they are adepts at the game. Once a clear drive carried the jack to the ditch, when a homo skip looked well placed with four counting woods, and on another end a wood close to the jack was cleanly picked out so os to enable the Now Zealand skip to claim three shots. Such good fortune, however, did not attend one of tho home skips, who drove and .missed when his opponent had six shots in the count. Anri yet this home skip, who had the advantage of a strong third, finished with a lead of eight shots. Scores: N.Z. P.&P.
