g IE- —it is not difficult to answer and refute’ Mr C. H. M‘Lean’s letter in your issue to-day. He is wrong in saying that the song “The Land o’ the Leal” does not appear in any edition of Burns’s works, for it is well known that it appears in a few. The reason that it does not appear in all is simply because the manuscript has never been found. On the other hand, until the publication of Dr Rogers’s memoirs of Lady Nairne, all Scotland received it as the work of Bums. But being written on his deathbed it could not be expected to be found amongst his well-arranged manuscripts. If anyone will take the trouble to read Mr Alex. Crichton’s history of the controversy, and compare it with Dr Rogers’s attempt, ho willnavo no difficulty in seeing where the truth lies. Besides, it is now known and accepted that Lady Naime disowned the authorship, and only added words to it because she liked the air, so that Lady Nairne’s claim is for ever discharged.—X am etc., Wm, M.
