GENERAL NEWS.

There was a good attendance of members at the iseptomber meeting of the Dunedin Photographic Society. A demonstration on enlarging was given, tho lecturers (Messrs liarland, Trevena, and Dickison) each showing various methods essential to pictorial photography. The results of the home portrait competition were as follow •—Senior grade: A .Dickison 1, D. J. Sh'erriff 2. Junior grade: S. Devereux I, Mrs Pinnock <!. During the evening the oportonity was taken of expressing the members' great appreciation of the work of the honorary secretary, Miss B. M. Gibson, who for the past three years had given a great amount of her time and energy to tho furtherance ol the interests of the society. Members had voiced the opinion that an expression of thanks should be backed up by something more tangible, and this took the form of a solid leather suit-case and a thermos flask: These gifts were duly presented to Miss Gibson by the president, with many expressions of goodwill and esteem from her fellow members, the recipient briefly responding. Mr Alfred Snowball, of Christehuroh lectured to a crowded house at Kaikorai on Thursday flight in aid of the Kaikorai School Memorial Arch Fund. His subject JNcw Zealand," proved a very interesting one, and for two hours with picture and story he kept the interest of his audience i-ho story of the Maoris and their legends were exceedingly instructive, and showed that the lecturer had gone very deeolv into their history- The chairman (Mr" j W Todd) reported that the fund required a further £200 before the erection of the memorial could be proceeded with. The school fife and drum band, under' Mr J H. Mathieson, suitably rendered several items during tho lecture intervals. A vote of thanks was passed to tho lecturer and the band. The opening of York Place Hall bv the religious assembly, which had for over tho last 55 years boon holding its services in the Ohoral Hall was celebrated by a social gathering in the new building last Wednesday night After justice had been done to the repast provided by the tjies of the congregation, tho church report for tho last year was Tead, and the circumstances leading up to the change of address recalled. Mr James Barr then related some interesting historic facts connected with the gathering during tho last 50 years, and some happy reminiscent character sketches of departed members and workers in the assembly of long ago. The choir rendered a contribution to the evening's enjoyment, and Miss Olive Paterson sang a sacred solo. Mr A. 11. Heycock occupied the chair, and amongst those taking part in the proceedings were Messrs Duncan Wright. N Patersori, John Wilkinson, W. R. Jeffreys', James Gilmore, and John Southpy and the Rev Uiarles D&llaston. During the interval between the social and the second part of tho meeting a successful missionary sale of work was conducted in another oart of the building.
