A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE,

The Customs returns show that the trade of France during the first eight months of 1920 largely increased compared with the corresponding period of 1919. Speaking at Sherbrooke, Quebec, the Prime Minister (Mr Meighen) said that the main issue at the next Canadian elections would bo a protective tariff for Canadian industries as against Freetrade. He pointed out that increased home production and a decrease in purchases from the United States was the only means of meeting the -penaltv of 110,000,000 dollars which Canada loses annually through the adverse exchange rates" with the United States.
