PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD

Tho monthly meeting was heJd' at Portobelio yesterday, and was attended by Messrs H. Allan (chairmen), W. Rowlands, It. Lee, C. Hall, S. Hmkley, W. Bowles, J. Sawle. and P. Moss.

The Chairman said that the. recent death ot Mr William. A. Wilson had removed & very old resident, of the district, who was probably one of the original members of the PortobeilO Road Boaid, and who was chairman of tho board for a uurnbar of years. A resolution of respect was curried. 'Phe Secretary of the Otago Motor Club notified the donution of £10 towards ■ the repairs being earned out on the Beach road.— Resolved to return the cheque,' as the expenditure of £1D on 15 miles of road would, be of no value to motorists or others. Tho Hon- li EL Clark wrote stating that he would bo delighted to assist tho local member in any matter pertaining to the district.—Received with thanks.

G-rigg, Broad Bay, wanted permission to erect a temporary shed, at' the foot of the hill, to accomcdttte a motor car.— Board had 110 power to grant tho request. -1 he North-lirast Harbour Improvement Society washed to havo the lagoon flat on which its hall was situated! vested in the society. It understood the Portobello Library l Committee w«s successful in respect to a similar application. Mr Rowlands said filling in for beautifying purposes was proposed.— Lstter received.

Mr A. Francis, Portobello, again applied that something bo done to the hill on Ilia property in Leith "Walk. The hill was in a shocking condition, and the writer wanted tile road metalled as far as his cowshed. The metal could bo taken freo of charge from, the quarry on his property.—The Caiairman said the board had. previously decided to effect improvements. On the motion cf Air Rowlands, it wa3 resolved that the board endeavour to get tho ■Eoad Boards Act amended when the Counties ' Act was being-revised. The Chairman said' ho had made inquiries in respect to the police doing ranger work, : and found it would be necessary for the board o refer a request to the Commissioner of olice if it wished to get the local constable to act as ranger. Mr Rowlands reported that the work done" during the month in Xorth-East Harbour mainly consisted in quarrying, breaking, and spreading metal. A number of the worse portions of the road had been repaired.
