GOLF.
The first qualifying round of the Otago Golf Club's championship was played on Balmacewen links on Saturday afternoon under good weather conditions. Mr G. F. Barnett,. who has accounted for the last three St. Andrew's Cross competitions, again returned the best score, with a round of 78, beating the record for tho course of 79, put up by l)r EL Ross and Mr H. H. Hutchison. The former is on service oh a hospital ship. The ilatter will return from the front this week. Saturday's scores were on the whole 'very poor, there being a differof nine strobes between tie best score and the next. ... \ - The best gross scares were:—G.' F. Bart nett 78, H. Brasch 87, E. M.
