WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was hold yesterday; present —Crs Orbell (chairman), Briscoe, M'Lachlan, M'Leod, Laley, and M'Gill. The inspector's report having reference only to the continuation of maintenance work in the county during the month, was adopted. /

The tender of Messrs J. M'Grath for the supply of dog oollars, at the rate of £3 12s 6d per 100, was accepted. Accounts amounting to £185 7a were passed for payment. A notification was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs that the Government had deaided to permit local bodies to make their own arrangements for the celebration of Peace. —Received.

Colonel Cowie Nicholls wrote suggesting that the council undertake a scheme Kimiln.i' to tha't adopted by the Waitaki County Council, to plant single trees at the mile posts throughout the district in memory of the men from the county who made the supreme sacrifice at the war.—He thought it would be a fine thing if the whole of the local bodies in Otago would adopt this echeme.^ —The chairman thought it a good suggestion, .but before the council did anything, they should communicate with Dr Douglas, of Oamaru, with whom the proposal originated, with a view to getting full particulars of it from him.—The letter was received and the proposal approved. The Secretary of the Otago Hospital and Charitable _ Aid Board wrote asking to be supplied with information as to cases of destitution arising .from the epidemic, under the following headings:—Loss of father or husband, mother or wife, or both parents. —To be attended to.

The Alexandra Borough Council forwarded a copy of a resolution passed by it and sent on to the Minister of Internal Affairs, protesting against persons suffering from tuberculosis being sent into 7 favourably situated country districts, for which it asked the council's support.—Received. Messrs N. A. and D. Booth applied for permission to lay a tram line across the road opposite their sawmill at WaitatL They would not injure the road in any way. —Granted, stibject to the inspector's approval.

Mr J. W. Krrmibnrgh, Officer in Charge of the Internal Affaire Department, writing under date December 11, asked for the council's monthly return of permits ■ issued under section 33 of the War Legislation Act, 1917. He stated that this statement was now considerably overdue.—The clerk produced a certificate from the department acknowledging the receipt of the return asked for. —-It was decided to receive the letter.

The Chairman reported that the council had been successful in its only application to the Government for a grant. Members would have noticed that £500 had been placed on the Estimates for the main road, from Evansdale to Palmerston, on a £1 for £1 basis.—Or M'Leod suggested that an application be -made to the Otago MotorClub for a. grant towards the upkeep of the Merton riding. He said his riding would find £100 for the main road, and thereby secure another £100 from the grant. He was of opinion that the Motor Club should find £50, which would ensure a further £50 from the grant being spent. This would make a total of £300 for the road in Merton riding.—lt was decided to apply to the Publio Works Department for permission to expend the grant.—On the motion of Cr;. M'Leod, it was resolved to apply to the Motor Club for £100 for repairing the main road in the Merton riding.
