FLOWER SHOW

The Moray Place Congregational Sunday School's annual spring flower show \vaa opened in the Jubilee Hall last night by the Rev. W. Saunders. The entries -were only about half as many in number aa usual, the reduction being doubtless due' to the° lateness of the season and the changeable •weather of tho last few days. As far as quality is concerned, however; the exhibits were all that could be desired,: • and as they had been arranged in a really artistic _ manner the effect was pleasing. - Narcissi of various kitfds were the principal feature of the show, but other popular spring flowers were Very well represented. . Miss Shaddock gained the first prize for tho gentleman's buttonhole, lady's spray, ' decorated stand, and decorated bowl; and Miss M. Begg- was awarded first place for the best display of narcissi. The judges - were Mr Johnstono (collections of florwers), Miss Turner (decorative work), Miss Samson (cookery—a good display), Mr D. Cameron _ (sweets). Last night a mimbpj- of readings and character sketches by Mr De Spong were very much appreciated, and to-night mi/™ will be provided by Miss B. Smith's pupils. Mr D. Tannock gave a most interesting! address •on the cultivation of spring! flowers—bulbous, habaceous, and shrubs, —■ his chief point as regard narcissi being that the leaves should be allowed to ripen off before they were disturbed, in order to ensure that the bulbs would flower the next season. In dealing with wallflower, h© re- . ;'• marked tbiit it was surprising how many people- did not know the right way to. grow it in order to obtain best results. ■ Mr Tannock explained many mistakes popu- ' . larly made by growers of spring flowers.
