xfTZ* M - Tubman, Fortieth Remforooincnts, who died from sickness at Salisbury Hospital -on September 18, sailed from New Zealand on July 10 m the best of health, and her death oame as a very severe shook to her relatives, bister Tubman wag tho seoond daughter of the late Mi Edward Tubman, Dumbarton, Roxburgh, Otago, and Mrs Tubman, of St. Itilda. She was born at Dumbarton on April 18, 1887, and woe educated in tho district school. She went through her training at Dunedin, St Helena, and Hospitals. After finishing her course she was district nurse for 12 months, and undertook private nursing in different parts of .Ntew Zealand. Before she left New Zealand she was at the Denniston Hospital, West Coast. _ Sister Tubman had a brother killed in action in France on October 12, 1917. . Corporal "William Pollock, who was killed m action on August 30, was the eldest son. ?i j Pollock, Derwent street, Oamaru - ifi_ Southland). Ho was in his twentyeighth year, and was married. Ho was educa*ted at tli-e Ontram School, afterwards adopting- farmiiig. He was a prominent member of tho Murihiku and North Otago Alounted Rifles. Ho enlisted, at Oiama»ru 3 and after spending seven months in camp, sailed with tho 27th N.Z.R.B. He was wounded in the knee on November 18, and after recovering went to the Base Caonp in France as a physical drill instructor, and in June was classed as fit for_ a return to the firing line. At the date of his' last letter he was in the Entrenching Battalion. His only bioi/her is in the iVlachine Gun Sect-ion in France.

Lance-corporal Thomas Burnett, reported died from wounds nn September 4, was the second youngest son of*Mr Thomas Burnett (Middlemarch). He was born and educated at Middlemarch, and afterwards followed fanning pursuits up to the time he enlisted with the Twenty-first Reinforcements. He left New Zealand.in January, 1917, and after training in England proceeded to France, where he was slightly wounded in Juno of the same year. On recovering, lie again proceeded to the front, where he again received wounds, this time bringing on his death. . Previous to enlisting lie took a keen interest in Territorial matters.

Corporal Leonard J. Loivden, killed in action, was the only son of Mr J. Itowden (Labour Department), Christchurch. He was born in 1533, and educated at the Mornington and Otago Boys' High Schools, where he gained junior and senior scholarships, matriculating and taking the olevenih place on tho list of candidates in the 1903 Civil Service examinations. Prior to enlistment he cccn-' pied tho position of chief clerk in tho Dunedin branch of the London and Lancashire Ftro Insurance Company. Ho left New Zealand. as a, private with the Twenty-fifth Reinforcements, and v,as transferred to the Lewis Gun Section whilo on active servicc. Before leaving New Zealand he was married to the daughter of tho late Mr C. E. Thompson, of Dunedin. '
