SPORTING.
FOOTBALL. The banner won by the Southland Boys' High School football team this season was presented by officials of the Southland Rugby Union at Invereargill yesterday afternoon. The speakers—Messrs A. Geddes (president of the union). R. D. Isaacs, and G. W. Woodsy-complimented the boys on their success in tho recent secondary schools tournament. It was stated that their victory was due to their excellent tackling. Tho opinion was expressed that the Otago High School team had learned a valuable lesson from tho Southland boys in this important department of the game, and that attack was not tho only essential in Rugby. The Otago team was described as the best in the competition, but they had met a team whose tackling was superb. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that- Mr Greenwood has decided to donate the stake to patriotic purposes if Biplane wins the Spring Stakes to-day.
