EPIDEMIC ON TROOPSHIP.

UNQUIRY BEING HELD. SOURCE OF INFECTION. A CRUISER SUSPECTED. LIST OF PATIENTS IN HOSPITAL. (I'Ett United Press Association.) f WELLINGTON, September 19. Ihe Minister of Defenco has received further advice concerning the epidemic which caused tho death of many men of the 40th Reinforcements on the voyage to England. Sir James Allen stated this evening that he had received a cablegram from General Richardson, commanding the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the United Kingdom. General Richardson reported that a court of inquiry was being held into the matter, but as the investigation was not yet complete the findings of the court were not available. He hoped to be able to report in a few days. Ihe Minister added: "It appears from the preliminary account which lias come to me, but which is not an official report, that the infection did not como from the vessel visiting the last' port of call wiiich I have previously mentioned. The infection arose subsequently to that, and not on account of mun having landed there. It seems to have come from a cruiser which was accompanying the convoy. The sickness was not confined to our men,, for all the transports in the convoy except one had a laxge number of deaths. General Richardson tliinks that the evidence will show that the snip was not overcrowded. Up to date 74 deaths have been reported, 63 men having died at sea and six ashore. There are still 150 men 'u * spital, two of whom are dangerously |1, The others axe all doing well, and are ~ w. 'recover. Tho sickness is rapidly diminishing. The men are now cheery, and they are being well looked after. General Richardson is granting men all special leave immediately tney are free from infection. General Richardson telegraphs that the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in the United gangdom wish to convey their deepest sympathy to the relatives of the deceased. I have telegraphed to General Richardson asking him to report the names of those dangerously ill and to keep us advised of the dangerous or serious cases." PATIENTS IN HOSPITAL. VARIETY OF ILLNESSES.
