PIPERS AND DANGERS' ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL COMPETITIONS. Tho seventh annual piping and dancing compel it ions held under tho auspices of the Ota go branch of t.lie New Zealand I lporv; ami Danyers' Ass(x;iation took place "i tho Kings '1 lioat.ro yesterday afternoon and evening, in the presence of a very largo attendance. Ihe not proceeds of tho competitions !>ro t.his year to bo. devoted to J' 1 ? . ,f° r relief of distress in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Considering; the war conditions and other influences of an allied nature, the entries were remarkably well maintained, competitors Ix'ing in attendance from as far " 0I Vii aS ilnf l from as far south as Bluff, while it was pleasing to not : oo not a few returned soldiers amongst the f'- Wrs ' *^' s y«am, a remarkably high standard was in evidence, both in the dancing and piping events. There were many of the best local bagpipe players among tho competitors, as well as some fine players from Wellington, and also from Ma tan ra; and. this being so, those present found much to admire, and on many occasions they demonstrated their appreciation by hearty applause. The danclnff events were a genuine pleasure to watch, and the judges expressed the opinion that these reach a high level of excellence, everv competitor justifying his or her entry. In the course of a few remarks made at the close of the competitions, Mr W. H. M'Kenzie stated that, the outstanding performance was the Sean Truibhais danced by Miss T. Sutherland (of Timaru), which easily placed her first in this class, but in all the other _ contests the _competitor were very close indeed. The management of the competitions which devolved large];, upon tho secretary (Mr F. A. Cheyne), left nothing to be desired, a result due in no small degree to the energy displayed by the whole of the members of an excellent .committee. The system adopted this year was one which made for a considerable saving of time. Tho whole of the competitors were required to perform in the afternoon and in each event the best three, and in some oases four, competed finally in the evening, when the iudges announced thoiverdict. The system of indicating results and of showing what, 'was occurring on the at-age was also a great assistance to tho spectators. It is rather noteworthy that, although Dunedin is looked upon "as the principal eentro of Sco'ttish folk in New Zealand, tho chamnion dancer (Miss Tuppy Sutherland) should come from Timaru; while the winner of the first prize for most points in piping (Mr J. A. Cameron) hails from Mataura. However, both the local dancers and pipers were extremely well represented in the prize-list. The' following are the results: — DANCING. Judges: Messrs H.
