ACCIDENTS ON WHARVES
EVIDENCE AT LYTTELTON.
(Peb United Phess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 28. J.he Commission of Inquiry into accidents on the waterfront sat at Lyttelton" to-day. • . Evidence was given by waterside workers of long experience as to the state of gear m the ships trading to the port generally. It was stated that the -winches in ships wore in bad order, the , brakes acting improperly, while the lighting system was 'u cases bat '- An improvement on the hook used on the coal baskets was necessary. In several cases the hatches wero too short, and had to bo kept up with wedges or bits of -wood. It was claimed that spliced running gear should not be used, and that all ladders in hatches should be direct from top to bottom. Defeots in certain ships were specified, which it was contended should be remedied. In every case where complaint had been made repairs and improvements had been effected.
