OTAGO ART SOCIETY
EXHIBITION OP SKEirCHES. An exhibition of sketches and artcrafts work vua opened last night under tho auspices of tho Otago Art Society at tho Art Gallery. In order that country visitors might have an opportunity of learning tho merits of Now Zealand artists and tho very satisfactory progress that is being made by students in the various art schools in the dominion, tho Art Society decided to open the exhibition in Show Week. As there is no charge made for admission, country visitors will miss ,'i great pleasure if they do not make good uso of tho opportunities for inspection now offered to them. The collection is without question tho largest and most, representative that has ever been hold in Dunedin. Tho sketches have boon sent from all tho centres between Wellington and Invercargil], and arc so numerous that the Hanging Committee had great difficulty in finding them suitable wall space. Tho difficulty has been met by providing convenient screens, so that tho sketches may not suffer from unduo elevation. The exhibitors have in many cases succeeded in transferring to their oaeels tho true, local colouring proper to New Zealand scenery and its atmosphere. Tho students in the Dunedin School of Art havo sent a large and creditable collection, some of the head studies showing decided merit. Tlio arts and crafts exhibits are not as numerous as usual, but tho high duality of the needlework displayed on the tables cannot be questioned. The exhibition will remain open during the remainder of the week.
