BALCLUTHA WINTER SHOW
__ The Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society's eleventh annual winter show was held on .Friday jn exceedingly cold and showery "weather. It was, however, sale 'Jay, and the attendance proved satisfactory. Thi! display was one which could hardly fail to gladden the eye of the man on tno land. The turnip class comprised a number of well-grown samples, arid the carrots and parsnips, which in some instances were of great size, afforded additional proof of the fertility of tho soil of Southern Ot-ago. Tho potatoes, which were confined to about half a dozen varieties, included some capital samples. Onions, cabbage, mangolds of enormous size, silver boet, leeks, etc., were all worthy of a place in the show, and were a distinct credit to the growers. Mr J. F. Miller (Dunedin), who judged the grain and seeds, said the exhibits were not quite up to tho standard expected; several of the oat samples being light; but some fair samples of tiartons were shown. The judge of the' potatoes and roots (Mr D. Sutherland. Taieri) said that these on the whole were very good in quality, although not as large as might have been expected. Tho judge of tho flowers and fruit (Mr C. E. Naish. Balclutha) said that the pot plants and cut flowers showed a decided improvement on former years, especially tho chrysanthemums, which were the finest ever shown at Balclutha. The fruit entries, though not strong numerically,' were well up to standard. Mr .A. Mathcwson (Dunedin), judge of (ho sheep section, said that in 'the Down crosses the first and second prizctakers were of exceptional quality, and would be hard to beat anywhere. The freezing lambs class was won by Down cross lambs, which were of very nice quality, with good skins. In tho class for three fat lambs, bred by exhibitor, tho winning pen (crossbrcd, bred by Mr A. M. Macdonald, C&rterhopc) was of extra good quality. In heavy classos a pen of three wethers bred by Mr Adam King _ (Stoney Crook) would bo hard to brat in any show. The winning pen of two-shear fat wethers bred by exhibitor (Mr King) were in proportion equal to his heavy sheep. Tho second pen, bred by Mr <T. Gordon (Warepa), were also of high quality. Freezing pens were of avrr.igo quality. Heavy longwool lambs bred by Mr Gordon were an cr.pccially good lot. Taking tho sheop section as a whole, tho sxhifcits wcro very good and a feature of tho show.
