THE WEATHER
A COLD SNAP. The weather on Saturday night and yesterday was distinctly cold. Shortly after 7 o'clock yesterday morning enow fell for a few minutes in the city. More fell on tho higher levels, as Flagstaff Hill and Mount Cargill were tipped with snow yesterday. There was a heavy fall of snow on tho ranges in Friday (writes our Alexandra corwith some rain on the low country. The barometer has been phenomenally low, registering 27.8 in Alexandra, equal to 23.3 at sea level. Tho local schoolmaster, who lias kept readings for 30 years in many places, has never experienced to low. a, barometer. The weather for somo time past has (our Palmerston correspondent writes) been extraordinarily dry for this time of tho yoar, and not a few peoplo who aro entirely dependent upon their tanks for a supply ot water would glady welcome tho showers which fell towards th<v- end of last week. Quito remarkable, too, has been the continuation of dull dav6 and tho almost total abscnce of wind. The latter feature, however, has been much appreciated as wind nt. this season is usually far from enjoyable. Tho farmers have been singularly fortunate in getting on with their ploughing uninterrupted by climatic conditions, and the preparations for next season's cropping are well advanced. (Fbom Oca Own Oorbespondent., STATION PEAK, May 24. The rainfall registered here for the 24 hours ended 8 a.m. on May 24 was 44 points.
