DISASTROUS FIRE

BIG BLAZE AT GORE. PRACTICALLY ALL TWO-STOREY. BLOCK DESTROYED. (Pee United Press Association.) GORE, May 26. A disastrous fire occurred in Gore at 5 o'clock this morning, and destroyed practically all of Holland's two-storey' block in the main street. The following shops were destroyed:— Hamilton's (jeweller), Harliwich's (fruiterer), Forbes's (bookseller), Calder's (draper), Edgar Watt's (draper), also Miss Barclay's, (dressmaker), Gore Returned Soldiers' club rooms, and Mrs Henderson's rooms and. private apartments, and the drapery stocks of M'Gruer, Taylor, and Co. The insurances are:—Holland's Buildings, £8000. Stocks of tenants: Calder, £1000} Hamilton, £1600; Watt, £1000; Forbes,. £600; M'Gruer, Taylor, and Co., £3500.' Harliwieh, Henderson, Miss Barclay, and the Soldiers' Club were uninsured. Tho insurance companies affected are the New Zealand, National, Guardian, Standard, Norwich Union, and the Union. J. T. Holland's shop was damaged' by water. Tho origin of tho fire is a mystery. Mrs S. Henderson was aware of smoke at an early hour, when she found a passage full of smoke. The big fire was fought in'' Ik fierco gale. The volunteer brigade did excellent work.
