SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. (Pbb United Fukss Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 22. The annual conference of the New Zealand secondary school teachers was opened to-day. Mr W. J. Morrell (Otago Bovs' High School) presided. In his address, Mr Morrell said that as secondary teachers they must resist the tendency to undue centralisation. In proportion as their bondage to Wellington increased their labours would become less spontaneous and inspiring. Meanwhile they must improve the quality of their own services, but this they would never do so Ion;r as teaching was so ill-paid and relatively so little honoured socially. There were hopeful signs, however, tliat the interest in education was increasing. Mr T. D. Pe.n-po (Invercargill) was elected president, and Miss Naney Jobson (Invercargill) secretary and treasurer. It was resolved to recommend that any candidate for matriculation who does not nroduce a satisfactory certificate that he has passed through a three years' course of work, including practical work at a secondary school, or its equivalent, in ono of tl.o scicnces prescribed for matriculation be required to pass in six subjects.
