UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the University Council, held yesterday, was attended by | t.tao Rev. A. Cameron (Chancellor), Mr J. Roberts (Vice-ehanocllor), Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., Professor Hewitson, the Hon. T. MaoGibboii, M.L.0., Dr Ferguson, Dr Benham, Mr J. Ross, Dr Church, Mr J. 11. Walker. Mr J. C. Stephens, and Mr L. D. Ritchie. Letters were submitted which had been sent to the Education Department, asking tho department: (1) To approve of extensions to Studholmo House, at a cost of £1000, the Council providing £5(X); to approve of modified plans for tho new Home Kbienoc School on Tanna Hill (four proposals were submitted, estimated to cost respectively £4949, £6413, £7669, and £8500). Tho Finance Committee submitted a statement of receipts and payments as affecting tho general account for the past month as follows:—Receipts, £4498 18s Id; payments, £4428 10s 6d; balance as per pass-book. £5595 9s 9d; cheques outstanding, £4452 9s 2d; cash book balance, £1134 0s 7d. The Chancellor submitted a recommendation <hat Miss M. I. TurnbuJl should be paid £75 for tho work undertaken by her in connection with tho class in junior Latin. Tho Acting Director of the Dental School forwarded a oopy of a letter from Dr Siedeberg to the effect that there was insufficient accommodation for patients resting after an anaesthetic. He also reported receipt of a donation of £5 5s from Messrs Suckling Bras., of Uhristchurch.—lt was resolved that the registrar and Mr Davios be given power to act up to the amount of £10 10s in providing further accommodation for patients.—The report was adopted. The Home Science Committee reported that at its meeting the annual report of the Dean of the Faculty and tho financial statement as to Studholme House were presented. Tho committee expressed satisfaction with the report, and resolved to thank Professor Boys-Smith for the results shown by the financial statement of Studholme House. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to Messrs William Brown and Co. for auditing the Studholme House accounts for the past three years. . Miss Jenkins, clerical assistant to Professor BoysSmith, forwarded a letter in which she submitted her resignation of the post she had held. It was resolved to accept Miss Jenkins's resignation with regret, and to thank her for her past services, which have given every satisfaction. It was also resolved to wish her every happiness in her approaching marriage. It was also resolved to recommend the appointment of Miss O. M. Thomson in Miss Jenkins's place, at a salary not exceeding £52 per annum, the details to be left in the hands of Professor Boys-Smith and the Registrar. —The report was adopted. The reports of the Works Committee and the Library Committee were also adopted. The Chairman of the Professorial Board wrote reporting that the board had approved of the bursaries of dental students on active service being available on their return.— The Council approved of the board's action. The Chairman of the same board wrote stating that it had approved of a letter from Dr Benham, asking for the appointment of a lecturer in botany, and pointed out to the council that tho time had come when the professors ot anatomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and physiology should each have a competent, full-timo assistant. Tho writer also stated that, as suggested by Mr Davies (Dental School), a special class in anatomy would be required for dental students, and that it would be necessary to appoint an assistant to Dr Gowland for this purpose.—Dr Church suggested a meeting of the combined Finance and Medical Committees to consider the question. The matter was a very important one, for they often heard it said that the professors were over-worked.—Dr Benham pointed out that what he asked was that the University should provide teaching in the subject of botany, and in order that that might be done they must have a capable person to teach it. He suggested tho appointment of a young lady .it present in. Dunedin who was occupying the position of national research scholar.—Tho letter was referred to the combined committees. Dr Church was appointed a co-optative member of the Hospital Committee. Professjor Howitson was appointed a member of the University Senate The Minister of Education wrote acknowledging tho council's letters asking for extensions to Studholme House and for flew school buildings. He was obtaining a report on this matter from the Director of Education.—Received. W. H. Cockerill wrote resigning his position of;caretaker of the new Medical School. Dr Benham moved, with regard to military honours conferred upon Major Frederick Cameron, Captain Roland A. H. Fulton, and Lieutenant J. M. Paterson, that the congratulations of the Council be extended to the recipients or their next-of-kin.—The 1 motion was carried.
