A CURIOUS APPOINTMENT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Can you tell mo if the position to which an ex-councillor (Mr J. Carroll) has been appointed at the tramsheds was advertised? If not, why not? Or was the position made for him, while many good' returned soldiers have to go to the" North Island to get decent positions aiter risking their lives in fighting for us? As the ratepayer.-? have to pay, it is right that they Bliould know. —I am, etc., May 18. I>atx, ight. [It is, we aro informed, not customary for the CSty Council to advertise* for applicants for positions of this kind. Instructions have been issued to the heads of all departments to give preference to returned soldiers in the filling of vacancies, always provided that a returned soldier capable of performing the work is available. _ A great deal of difficulty has been found in securing the necessary labour in the various corporation departments, and wo are informed that the heads of departments arc extremely anxious to obtain men suitable for unskilled work. The person to whose appointment exception is taken was. wo understand, formerly employed by the tramways department in the sumo kind of work as that in which lie is at present engaged. We aro assured that a position was not speciaJlv croa'tcd for him.—En. O.D.T.]
