ACTING-CAPTAIN vPEMBER- ' TON. Mr O. B. Pemberton, secretary of tho Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, has just, recsived a letter from his brother, Acting-captain T. J. Pemberton, formerly of the Lyttelton Times and Otago Daily Times staffs, who had a while previously returned to France after recovering from wounds. ' Acting-captain Pemberton, who is attached to the had again been in the firing line for a time when he was sent to a training collego to qualify for his captain's commission. Here ho met several old scholars of the Christchurch Boys' High School, who were also undergoing training-. Particular mention is made m Acting-captain Pemberton's letter of the immense amount of work which is now being undertaken in various branches of army service bv tho women's auxiliaries, thus releasing many men for duties nearer the firing line. In the course of a very newsy budget, Acting-captain Pemberton relates _ a remarkable coincidence in connection with his return to the firing line. With his regiment lie was ordered: to hold a position, which was the exact place whore ho had been previously wounded. He had no sooner arrived than the Iluns commenced shelling the pla.ee, and one shell fell where Acting-captain Pemberton was with his company. Fortunately it was only a gas shell, and not a high explosive, but even so, it was a welcome that would rather have been disnensed with.
