THE POLA RAID

A BRILLIANT FEAT. Auttr&lian and N.Z. Cablo Association. ROME, May 17. There is much speculation concerning the method of the Italian sinking of the Austrian warship of the Viribus Unitis class at Pola. The feat is regarded as one of the most brilliant episodes of the war. The officer Pellegrinis and his comrades were picked men. Itaiian hydroplanes supported the party, and destroyed two enemy aeroplanes and drove down another. The Italian aeroplanes returned safely. BRAVE ITALIANS. HOW THE RAID WAS EFFECTED.

LONDON, May 18. (Received May 19, at 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph's Milan correspondent states that a motor boat carrying Pellegrini and three others entered Pola Harbour stealthily at night. Light draught enabled the boat to pass over submarine mines, but steel nets and many surface mines endangered the channel. The boat rapidly approached a Dreadnought and fired two torpedoes. Seaplanes saw both hitting. No news has been received of Pellegrini or his companions. There is little doubt as to their fate.
