A representative gathering of over 200. ' softgoofls assistants assembled at the . Waratah Tea-rooms on Tuesday evening, ! when a social and dance was held for the - purpose of bringing together the assistants I of different establishments. A very pleasant evening was spent in dancing, card parties, and musical items. It is an tic iEatcd that more such social evenings will a held in the near future. The Chairman expressed' regret that the committee was going to lose the services of Mr Parr. The motion was seconded by Mr Whitson, and carried by acclamation. In retarnine thanks, Mr Parr mentioned that he had been a member of the committee for nine years, and stated that he would remain in Dunedin for a month or more yet. He hoped that the Athenaeum would long continuo to hold tho high position that it had held as an institution in the past. It had a distinct position to fill in Dunedin, and he was quite sure tliat in the hands of capable oommittets such as had hitherto controlled it, it would continue to fill that position successfully. The monthly meeting of tho Forbury School Committee was held on Monday night. Mr C. A. Lucas occupied the chair The headmaster reported that tho average attendances for the past four weeks were: 697, 670 . 664, and 671. The banner had been .won by Standard YI. with 99 per cent, 98.1 per cent., 98.9 per cent., and 98.8 per cent. The present roll number was f 716. The amount deposited in the se.h6ol bank for the past month was £22 12s 3d, and the sum withdrawn 19s Id, leaving a balance of £140 7s lid. It was decided to close the school for tho winter term holidays on .Ala- 24 and to re-onen on June 4. The resignation of Mi«s Esther as eighth assistant was received with regret.
