BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. / Private Gordon M'Donald, who was killed while in action in France on October 4, was the youngest son of Mrs Janet M'Donald and the late Coll M'Donald, 20 McMillan street, Roslyn (formerly of Kilmog). Ho was born at Kilmog on October 10, 1895, and was educated at the Evanedale, Me-rton, and George Street Schools. He commenced work ■as an apprentice to the iron moulding trade, working for Messrs A. end T. Burt. Prior to leaving with tho Twenty-first Reinforcements he served for eight months on coast defence work. His brother James left with the Sixth Reinforcements, and is at present in France.
A cablegram has been received by Mr J. Harris, 8 Pine Hill terrace, stating that his son, Private A. J. Harris, has been admitted to hospital in France suffering from a nervous breakdown. ' Private Harris left New Zealand with the Twenty-first Reinforcements, and was admitted to hD3pital on June 10 suffering- from shell-shock, since then returning to the front. Word has been received that Private Akxander John Ourrie Reinforcements), son of Mr a,nd Mrs A. Currie, Milton, had been wounded in- the foot and admitted to hospital on the 13th October. Private Currie was employed by Mr G. P. Tomkinson, storekeeper, of Milburn.
Mrs W. Wilson, of Mill road, AVaima-te, has received advice that her eldest son, Sergeant Jas. Edward Carmichael, was killed in action in France on October 11. He was bom at Mount Cargill, and was 26 years of age. He was a, member of the Port Chalmers Navals for some years. He served in the Dunedin Fire Brigade, and also in the Auckland Brigade. He enlisted in Otago with the artillery in the Main Body, was wounded in the arm on Gallipoli, aad injured in a railway a-ccident in Egypt. He was a man of fine physique, being 6ft 2in in height, and well proportioned. His younger brother, Archibald, was killed in France in November of last year.
