MEETING- OF RESIDENTS.

There waft a largo attendance of householders at tho Presbyterian Hall, Mornington, him, evening, when a meeting wan held to consider the present position o( tho Elgin road and Maryhill tramlines. The meeting was also allied to discuss tho Commissioner's report following upon tho investigations mado recently by him (Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.). Mr A. Bathgate, who occupied tho chair, dealt in detail with this report, and, inter alia, ho stated that the ladies of the Maryhill district wero the chief sufferers as Hie result of tho abandonment of tho Maryhill lino.—("Hear, hear.) At tho present time tho position in regard to trams was an extraordinary one. It had boon stated that the tram had been a failure; but, dosp/to this argument, it had to bo lx>rno in mind that thero was no other means of traction, and, unless tho residents of the district took some action, they would be, for some time at least, in no better position than at prosent. At somo considerable length tho speaker analysed tho Commissioner's report, and expressed such opinions as wero in evident sympathy with tho sentiments of tho meeting: ,> The following motion was then moved hy Mr J. Inglis Wright: "That this mooting urges tho City Coimril to secure from the Minister of Public Works his consent to tho postponement of the' question of futuro action in regard to the two tramlines, granting meanwhile- permission to borrow tho necessary rails from tho Elgin road line, as a war measure, without in any way prejudicing, that line by a cancellation af the present Order-in-Council." The motion was carried -unanimously. A further resolution was moved by Mr J. W. Patton, to tho effect that a committee, consisting of Messrs Bathgate, Wright. Reynolds, anr] Meiklejohn, bo appointed to lay the foregoing resolution before the City Council, and to tako any further action as circumstances mav require to protect the rights of those affected by the stoppage of tho Maryhill line. This was also carried. . Messrs Inglis Wright, Findlay. Sincorlc, MncGrcgor, and Mrs Moody, together with Captain Simson, fipoke in favour of the foregoing motions. Tho matter of appointing renrrsentatives of tho district to wait on tho Minister was deferred to a further meeting.
