Moir from somewhere in France, he states that he wishes to tnank the Otago Patriotic Association for the regular supply of parcels which he has received every week since he has been in the trenches. Hβ says these gifts are greatly appreciated by the boys, at the front. , DUNEDIN ENGINEERS SUCCESS. Letters received by his parents from ScW land this week show that Mr J W M'Laren, a young Dunedin engineer,' has been granted a commission as first lieu-' tenant m. the Royal Engineers. On May 4-he went across the Channel to Prance to supervise the building of facilities to deal With transport work, such as the unloadmS pf war material —work similar to thai which he was performing at a naval base m England. Mr M'Laren, while serving his apprenticeship at Messrs M'Gregor's foundry, passed the matriculation examination at the Otago University. He then decided to attend the Glasgow University, and, after a'four years' course, he gained the B.Se. degree in engineering, coining third on the list. He was also awarded a diploma of_ proficiency in engineering science. Hd then joined the engineering staff of a naval base then under construction .for the British Government, and was appointed to supervise the most important section of this huge contract, the section costine over £1,000,000. From this position le was selected to carry out important works in France. Mr M'Laren , s numerous friends in Danedin will be pleaeed to hear of his success.
