At a meeting of the Port Chalmers School Committee last night, Miss E. M'Lean was selected as teacher for Standard 11. Miss Vera H. Sheppard has been appointed first assistant at the Cromwell ■School, and Miss M. G. Dumsday second assistant at the Alexandra. District High Sohool. Mr Kerihit Roosevelt, eldest son of Mr Theodore Roosevelt, formerly President of the United States, has accepted a commission in the British Army. The Rev. Frank Oldrievo, who was minister of tho Mornington Baptist Church for some time, and has for more than two years bot-n minister of thf Ashburton Baiptist Church, hue resigned, and will probably taico up, for a short time, organising work in connection with tho Mission to Lepers. Mr Oldri-ovo has bnen for the last four yeairs honoray general secretary for this mission in the South Island. Dr Michaeiis, tho new German Imperial Chancellor, is 60 years of age, is a bourgeois and a pure bureaucrat. He entered the civil service in 18S5 as a law teacher at Tokio, and subsequently served at various provincial posts until he became Undersecretary of the Prussian Finance Ministry. He propounded a good scheme in 1916. and was appointed to conduct it. The Kaiser apparently set aside all candidates who could bo regarded as pledged to any particular tendencies in foreign policy, "and is presenting Dr Michaeiis to the country merely as the most capable, unbiassed Prussian official that can be found.
