(Received July 24. at 5.5 p.m.) _ An urgent Government " whip" has been issued regarding Mr G. J. Wardle's (Labour) amendment. The Government regards the 25s minimum wage for agriculturists as fundamental. A pro-Govern-ment newspaper war has been started, opponents being urged not to create a crisis that will result in an appeal to the country. (Received July 24, at 7.10 p.m.) Mr Wardle's amendment was defeated by 301 votes to 102. (Received July 24, at 10.30 p.m.) Mr Prothero (President of the Board of Agriculture) informed the House that the Government could not accept Mr Wardle's amendment. If it were pressed to a division the Government must stand or fall by the result. The Bill was essential to our existence and safety. The minimum wage was irreducible, but a Wages Board could increase it. If the proposed increased wages were imposed it would mean the payment of an additional £40,000,000 by the farmers. The late Government had miscalculated the submarine menace, and the chances of a shortage, in the world's supply of grain and we could not afford a third miscalculation.
