WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION

AMERICAN TEA. That indefatigable body, the Otago and Southland Women's Patriotic Association, devised another moans of bringing people together and accumulating funds for the benefit of soldiers some little time back and on Saturday afternoon tested, with most gratifying results, the efficacy of this new method. The public was invited to attend an American tea in the Art Gallery Hal], the Art Gallery chamber being utilised for serving tea in. There was a very large crowd present, principally ladies and when they are about there is little or no chance of tea rooms being left unmolested and unpatronised. But tea fras not the only matter to occupy attention. There was a short musical programme, and a bag competition was held, those appearing in the concert items being Misses Ha&cridge (2), Miss Hughes, Miss Free, Miss Riddoll, and a returned soldier and piper A M'Millan. ' ' The bag competitions resulted as follows • Prettiest bag—Miss Hodge 1, Mrs Sum'-' merell 2; most original bag—Mrs J B Dick 1, Miss A. V. Haddock 2; special prize for best bag—Miss A. Martin 1; pin. cushions—Mrs Young (Auckland) 1, Miss Annio Barr 2; best collection of bags—Mrs M'Crorio 1; children's bag—Mabel Roy 1 Peggy Salmond 2; special prize (Allies', basrl— Miss M'Leod. The entCTtainracnt was continued, till 6 ; p.m., and was brought to a closo by the singing of tho National Anthem.
