RAVENSBOURNE

J'A small number of householders gathered in'the sehoolhouse last evening for the purpose of electing a school committee for the ensuing year. Mr D. A. R. M'Ewan occupied .the chair.

On the motion of Mr J. Robb', seconded by Mr J. Veitch, the report was adopted. Mr M'Ewan spoke in appreciative terms x of the work carried out during the year by tho head master (Mr Grant) and his assistants, remarking" that the year just completed was one of tho most successful in the history of tho school. Ho also paid a tribute to tho excellent work of the late Chief Inspector Richardson for his earnest and untiring endeavours in the interest of school children. He detailed the work of the retiring committee, and spoke of tho activity of members in connection with the now proficiency certificate regulations, and various other matters.

The ballot to elect the new committee resulted in Messrs J. D. Cameron, P. Christensen, G. Crosbie, T. Donaldson, J. Dunn, D. A. R. M'Ewan, and J. Kobb being chosen to fill the positions. At a meeting of the now committee Mr M'Ewan was elected chairman and Mr Cameron secretary. The committee will meet on the second Monday in each month. PORT CHALMERS. There was a good attendance of householders at the annual meeting last night. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, tho Chairman (Mr J. M'Lachlan, said they had every reason to bo proud of tho past year's work. Sickness amongst tho staff had thrown much extra work on the rector (Mr Booth), but notwithstanding this handicap, the inspector's report had been very good. Out of 46 pupils presented for the proficiency examination, 44 had been successful, and another had gained a competency. The classes in the secondary department were well attended, and the pupils came from all parts of the district. - He eulogised the services of the caretaker, the schoolhouse and grounds being kept' in perfect order. The school record showed that 230 ex-pupils were now serving their King and country, of whom 22 had given their lives to the cause. Referring to the school band, ho remarked that it was the solo representative of music in the town, and he thought it was entitled to a little monetary aid from the council.

Mr J. Mifi seconded tho motion, which was carried.

The Rev. W. M. Grant moved a resolution of sympathy with Miss Bott, in tho loss she sustained through the death of her father. Tin's was carried, all present standing. '

About 30 householders were present at the annual meeting held in the Concord School Mr Reeves was voted to tlio chair, and emphasised tho desirability of ladies taking scats >n the committee; but b:s appeal wat unsuccessful, only th'o required number of candidates having been nominated. Tho following were declared elected : —Messrs W H. Steele (chairman), H. A. Christie T Samson* J. Mitchell, J. Taylor, B.' J. Reeves,' "J. Morrison (lion, secretary). Tho outstanding fotibures of the report were:—Tho attendance rose from 143 to 152; 1323 articles wero made by the clvldren for tho Red Cross, and 1850' bottles wo gathered. A jumble sale realised £29 6s Id. Improvements during the year included asphalting in front of school' and tho purchase of half an aero to enlarge the school ground. The Navy League membership increased from 35 to 65. Tho meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring secretary (Mr Chambers), who did not seek xe-election. and tho chairman (Mr Reeves). ST. LEONARDS. GREEN ISLAND. Tho annual intetmg oi .householders was held in tho' schoolroom last night, and was attended by 26 persons. Mr D. Taylor was voted to the chair.

The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. fourteen nominations were received for scats on tho committee, and tho following nine were elected:—Messrs Jas. Orr (24)., H. Harraway (22), W. Johnstono <16), D. Taylor (20), T. Tonkins (17), W. Watson (17), J. Lindsay (16), R. Herbison (16), T Steele (16).

A vote of thanks was passed to the, Rev. ! Mr Kilpatrick for his attendance at j to impart religious instruction to tho chil- | dren; to Mr Buchanan for attendance at the school during band practice; also to tho head master and staff. The hope was expressed that Mr M'Donald woxdd make a speedy recovery. MOSG-lEL, The attendance at Mosgiel was small. Mr Logan was elected to the chair. Tho annual report and balanco sheet were adopted A vote of thanks to tho retiring committee and staff was passed on the motion of Dr Pinfold, seconded by Mr Chadwick. Tho following were elected a committee out of 11 nominations:—Messrs H. Millar, J. Logan, A. Cameron, A. Davidson, T. Walsh, J. Williamson, F. Smeaton, W. W. Tuxnbull, and W. Chadwick. WAKARI. The following committee for the Wakari School was elected last evening:—Messrs R. Brown (chairman), J. Hood (secretary and treasurer), C. Clark, H. M'Cullough, ii. Hemingway, J. Dick, and T. Wilson.
