LOCAL ELECTIONS

CR GREEN'S ADDRESS.

Cr Green addressed between 80 and 90 residents of North-East Valley on Saturday evening, Cr Hayward presiding. Tho candidate dealt at length with various matters connected with .the city, and was listened to attentively. Among the questions dealt with was the recently-adopted insurance scheme of tho council, which Cr Green said he was not in sympathy with, and which was a bad move, because if the tramWay sheds, for instance, were destroyed by firo all the money eet aside for insurance purposes would bo swallowed up. Cr Green was frequently applauded, particularly when ho urged the establishment of an adequate w'ater supply for the city and the extension of the tramwav service. With respect to the latter, he said that the tram service was no further ahead to-day than it was over 10 years ago. A point which appealed very much to his auditors was his statement that if returned as Mayor of the city ho would make it his special business to sec that our soldiers and their dependents received proper treatment. He pointed put that in some instances soldiers going to camp were promised eve.ry consideration ovhen they returned, and he showed with what little welcome some had been received on their return. If it had not been for the ladies tliero would have been no reception for these men. In this connection he referred particularly to tho cases of men who had disembarked at a northern port and had come on to Dunedin by train. On tho motion of Mr Howlison seconded by Mr Stout, a vote of thanks and confidence was passed.

The name of Mr J. W. Munro'is mentioned as that of a probable candidate for tho City Council. * ' Mr J. Ritchie will bo a - candidate for a seat oil the St. Kilda Council. It is understood that Mr H. L. Taplcy (retiring member) and Mr N.
