T.ho Committees of Management of tlio Otago Educational Institute hold its monthly meeting on Saturday morning, when thero was a good attendance. A good deal of business of a routine nature was dealt with in addition to business of a moro important character. Mr Flamank, treasurer for tho Richardson Memorial Fund, announced that subscriptions were coming in \ r ery satisfactorily, and it was agreed to put up a memorial stono with portion' of tho money ecnt in, and to leave consideration of what should bo dono with Uje remainder to stand over until tho next meeting. Tho secretary of tho N.Z.E.L sent down two _ resolutions for branches to answer, 0110 dealing with tho daylight saving movement, tho other with a recommendation that tho Government bo asked to grant increments to compensate civil servants for tho decreased purchasing power causcd by war prices. On tho latter question tho opinion was expressed that wo should all bo quito willing to suffer monetarily in. this great crisis, though pupil teachers, probationers, and students wero receiving niggardly treatment, but that tho Government should take effectrvo measures to roduco the cost of living by putting export duties on necessaries of life. Ono member drew attention to tlio unpatriotic expenditure on motor cars and other luxuries, arguing that to tho extent luxuries wero imported expenses wero charged agaiii3t profits, and the dominion in effect was subsidising tho importing of luxuries and decreasing tho taxation on profits. It was decided to ask tho Education Board to recommend committees to closo schools in Show Week.
