INVERCARGILL, March 27. * Let us run the country by women or by niggers," said a prominent member of the Committee of the Southland League at Monday's meeting; "but for/ goodness sake don't let us import Australian shirkers to run it.*' This remark was greeted with applause and "Hear, hears." It was occas.oned by a discussion. on the action of the chairman of No. 2 Otago Military Service Appeal Boardi m advocating that firms should advertise in Australia for applicants to fill vacancies on their respective staffs. The following resolution was carried unanimously:— "That this meeting of the Committee of the InvercargJl branch of the Southland protests very strongly against the suggestion of the chairman of tlie second Otago Military Service Appeal Board that positions of New Zealand men called up for military service should be filled by men imported from Australia. That a copy of this motion bo forwarded to the Acting Prime Minister."
