THE PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

TO THS EDITOR. Sir, —Some of tho business transacted by tho Port Chalmers Borough Council at its last meeting has prompted mo to write to you in order to ask if the business was dono in ..accordance with the Municipal Corporations Act. The Water Committee, requiring certain work done, asked three firms for a prie«;, and the lowest tender (£23) wus accepted. The Reserves Committee required certain work done at the Town Hall. It asked a local firm to draw up a specification and submit -a; price (£111), which the council accepted without inviting. public competition. One councilor objected to the work being carried out without any supervision.. Several months ago the conned called in expert advice as to drainage and water storage, and later on employed another engineer to write out a specification for some tarpaving, but these engineers wero not asked to carry out tho work, even if they submitted estimates, but in the case of tarpaving tenders were called for the work. As a ratepayer I object to work being done without competition.—l am, etc Port Chalmers, March 22. J. S. M. . [The Municipal Corporations Ant docs not requiro a borough council to oall for public tenders for work of the nature mentioned by our correspondent.—Ed. O.D.T.]
