NEW ZEALANDERS ON THE SOMME
HIGH PRAISE FROM BRITISH STAFF OFFICER. A young New Zealand officer in a BritisJ regiment, who has been attending lecture: in England for company commanding, writ ing to his father, a well-known Christchurch resident, says: '" We have had some very interesting leotnrcs during the 'week—one very fine one on the Somme battle, when the lecturer, a General Headquarters man, said that tho New Zealand Division on tho Somme held a record for this war. Throe times they had a task allotted to them, and on each occasion—in every case —the whole division took their objective, i.e., took all they attacked. No other division has done this in the war. Usually one_ regiment or two fail in their attack, but it wasn't so with the New Zealanders. Ho (the lecturer) was full of praiso, :ind he know what he was talking about, as ho was a lieutenant-colonel on the General Headquarters Staff of our army."
