APPEAL AGAINST A SENTENCE.;
DEPUTATION TO MS HAN AN.
(Pen United Peess Abbociatiox.) AUCKLAND, March 27.
A deputation waited on the Hon. J. A; Hanan, headed by Mr Richards, secretary of the Watersiders' Union, and asked for a remission of the sentence on Oliver Noakes,a member of the_ union, who was sentenced to 11 months' imprisonment for conduct; calculated to interfere with the loading Of a vessel and for using threatening language to anoihor watersider. It was urged that the sentence was excessive. '
The Mnister said he did not approve in general of interfering, with the decisions of tho stipendiary magistrates.' In Npalces'a caso an _ appeal had been lodged, arid that closed his mouth; bot he would obtain the documents and give tho matter every consideration. .
The Minister was asked to expedite ftiha hearing of the appeal " 'I
