The Hon. Nathan Ricks, United States Senator tor tho State of Idaho, arrived in Wellington by tho Moana from San Francisoo, on a tour of New Zealand. Tho Hon. W. L>. S. Mac Donald, who arrived m Christchurch on Slunday morning, is at present suffering from a someunat severe attack of influenza, and was on Monday (says tho Press) confined to bis room. Mr Percy Crawford, manager of the Tivoli Follies, arrived in Dunedm last evening. Miss Stewart (president of the Otago and Southland Women's Patriotic Association) returned yesterday from Wellington, where she had been attending the Patriotic Conference. Iho Otago Education Board yesterday received notice from the Director of Education that Mr M. Lynshey, of Christchurch Noimal School, has been appointed temporary inspector for Otago during Mc Robcitson's absence. Mr Lynshey will repoit to the senior inspector here on Saturday. flic late Mr W. A. Newman, of Dunedin, who passed away on Sunday after a brief illness, came out in 1874 by the ship Buckinghamshire. Ho joined his father in business as contracting plasterers, and continued up till tho time of his Alness to carry out many buccossful contracts, among which may be mentioned the Mosgiel Woollen Mills, tho New Zealand Express Company's building, tho Government Insurance ofhee, the Town Hall, and Telegraph office. Mr Newman took a keen interest in temperance movements, and held the position of hon. treasurer for the Sons and Daughters of Temperanco for many years. He was a respected citizen. He leaves a widow and giown family of six sons (two of whom arc in France and one at present m camp), and one daughter (whose husband, Captain Gavin Wardrop, is also in Fiance). Mr H. J. Gill, of Duncdin, and tho deceased were mates for practically 60 years, both being passengers by the Buckinghamshire.
