PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of tho Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last evening, Cr Mawson presiding in the absence of the Mayor. Two letters were received from the City Electrical Department in regard to the installation of b'ghting at Carey's Bay. These showed that the borough would now havo to bear an expenditure of some £416. this being made up of £116 for street lighting and £300 for private lighting. Tho latter sum would be made up of two yeare , revenue of £150 a year. So far as this revenue was concerned, £82 was already assured, leavintr £63 to be made up by private consumers. —Cγ Lightbourne moved that tho town clerk. Dunedin. be asked to instruct the electrical engineer to go on with the installation of the lizht at once, so as to have it in operation before the winter sets in. He stated that some 28 residents of Carey's Bay. out of 34 had agreed to become private consumers, so the position of the council was practically assured.—Cr Isbister seconded' the motion. —Cr M'Lachlan suggested that, with a view to economy, thoee residents who had not so far agreed to take the light be urged to do so at once. —'lhe motion was carried. Mr F. Williams, engineer, wrote submitting a report on the question of providing for additional water conservation for the borough at Berryman's Greek. After dealing with tho site and the dimensions of the structure, Mr Williams stated that, assuming the whole of the material was obtained from the inside of the reservoir, the following would be the storage capacity at the I various levels:—loft- depth of water. 100,000- gallons; 20ft, '590,000 gallons; 30ft, I 1,790,000 gallons; -40ft,' 4,100,000 gallons; 44-ft, 5,220,001) gallons. He estimated the cost of cpnslruction. of the reservoir at £5000.—Referred to Water Committee. Mr D. Macdonald (secretary of the Port Chalmers Fire Brigade) wrote stating that a reel had bqen placed at the new substation in Laing street, and the key left on "the verandah "of' a neigbbourin£ ceivedMr J. C. Stephens wrote enclosing a draft of amended bylaws regarding certain matters.—Referred to the By-laws Committee The Works Committee reported that the streets and channels had been attended to as usual during the past fortnight. It was recommended that tenders be called for asphalting vthe Macandiew coad footpath, 4ft wide, from 'the dock gates to Care\ a Bay—a distance of about 35 chain*. Blocked drains in Harrington stpaet and Beach street had been cleared, and several connections made to the Laing street sewer. — Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts during the past fortnight had amounted to £563 lls Id, and recommended accounts totalling £798 9s for paymentAdopted. The Water Committee reported that tho reservoir contained about lift below normal.—Adopted. Cr .Anderson mentioned that the seawall on the Beach road was getting out of order, and it was decided that the inspector should report.
