"GRIM SPECTRE. OF CONSCRIPTION." REFERENCE AT LABOUR GATHERING. MELBOURNE, April 10. Speaking at the Eight Hours diamond jubilee celebration, Mr Gill, vice-presi-dent, criticised members of the Federal House, and said that the. grim spectre of conscription hung over the land, and it was for the working class to say whether German methods should rule and whether the Government should introdiice conscription at once. They were not going to give away their liberty so dearly purchased. . They, as representatives of the workers, would not tolerate anyone who was going to sell, just as a pound of butter was sold, the body and soul of a human being. If that ever happened it would be followed by a serious revolution in Australia.
Replying, Senator Pearce said that the policy of the Government was voluntaryism. He had never heard of anyone that would refuse to support the conscript armies of our Allies. He believed that Australia would caTry on under voluntaryism .
