PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Portobello Road Board was Held yesterday afternoon, Mr- H. V. Fulton (chairman) presiding over a full attendance of members. Beforo proceeding to business, the Chairman made reference to the dieath of Mr Taverner's father, and a resolution of sympathy was passed The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £36 Os 2d be passed for payment. —In moving the_ adoption of the report, Mr Taverner said toe board now had a debit balance of £507 8s 7d, which was lower than it had been for a considerable time—a result partly due to ecouoiny and partly because the end of the financial year had brought in most of the outstanding accounts. ,The expenditure on road works was lower than for some time, and it was still necessary to keep all expenditure as low as possible. The board had to go through rhe incoming season with a minimum of expense. upon road works. — The report was adopted. The Works Committee reported that the troughs referred' to at last meeting had been completed, audi would be fixed up permanently this* week. The wharf fencing would be put in hand as soon as a new surfaceman had been appointed. Gill's culvert would be gone on with as soon as a surfaceman was available. The work on Mr Clark's property had been completed, and the 9in pipes lowered and draiio cleared out. Thw matter was carefully gone - into with Mr Clark, and the committee had every reason to believe that this would abate this long-standing trouble. Mr Clark had agreed to pay 10a towards the cost of lowering the pipes.—The report was adopted. Mr B. B. Couston, engineer, wrote stating that he was subdividing the portion of Mr Russell's property that was within the Portobello Road District. into allotments for the purpose of sale. He asked the board to pass a resolution exempting the Beach road and the District road, fronting .Mr property, from the provisions of section 117 of " The Public Works Act, 1908," and to forward suoh resolution to Wellington for the approval of the Minister. —After a lengthy discussion, in which Mr Couston took part, the board agreed that resolutions-of exemption bp forwarded, on condition that sufficient land was dedicated to enable the road to be widened to 40ft where the present road was not bounded by stone vralls, and' to 661t at the sharp corner. It was also decided to agree to the request so far as the District road was concerned. A further resolution was carried agreeing to take over a private road between sections 26 and 27, subject to the road being formed to a width of 16ft and metalled. The Assistant Under-secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs wrote enclosing an extract from'the Gazette regarding the proposed alteration of boundaries of the City of Dunedin and of the Tomahawk Portobello, and Peninsula Road Districts.— Received. The Public Works Department, forwarded approval of plans and specifications for expenditure of £50 grant for metalling the road on Hooper's Inlet HilL The cost of preparing the road for the metal would have to be borne by the board'. —Received. Some discussion took place in regard to the progress of the new recruiting scheme in the district.—Mr Allan stated that Mr Johnston andi himself had interviewed a number of single men, and these had almost al) expressed their willingness to go to the front- when they were made to. —It was decided to circularise all the eligible men in the district asking them to call on the local member nearest to their place of residence. ' It was decided! that the surfacemen be put on to patch the road between Macandrew's jetty and Roy's store, the matter to be dealt with by the Works Committee.
