HIGH SCHOOLS' GOVERNORS
The meeting of the Board of Governors of the Otago Boys' and Girls' High Schools was attended by the chairman (Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P.), and Messrs John Ross, G. C. Israel, J. M. Gallawav, H. Webb, D. T. Fleming, J. C. Stephens, and Dr Fulton. The Hector wrote reporting the death of two more old boys at the front, and the secretary was directed to express the board's sympathy with the relatives. , The number of old boys now known to be serving at the front was 4£2. The mentioning in despatches of the late Lieutenant-colonel Bauchop, Lieutenant-colonel Begg, and Lieutenant M'Pherson, old pupils 01 the school, was noted by the board. Accounts and salaries amounting to £944 7s 5d were passed for payment. The Works Committee recommended that the backyard and path at the rector's residence and tho paths at tho girls' school be asphalted, at a cost of £13 10s and £19 8s respectively.—Adopted. The Chairman reported that, at the request of the rector, he had authorised the secretary to advertise for three or more assistant masters, at salaries of from £180 to £225, as from February 1, 1916.—The chairman's action was approved. The resignations of Mr W. T. Stuart, as from January 31, and of Mr J. B. Macdonald. as from February 8, were accepted. Mr Israel gave notice to move at a future meeting that no gratuity in excess of one month's salary be given to any teacher. Mr Israel stated that the Education Board had found it necessary to take similar action.
The chairman and Messrs Stephens and Fleming wero appointed a sub-committee to confer with the lady principal with regard to the applications for the position of French mistress.
The Rector of the Boys' High School reported that the total number of boys now on the school roll was 356, including 95 seniors, 239 juniors, 1 governors' free place, and 21 paying pupils. The Navy League essay competition was taken on October 22, 345 essays being sent in. Practically tho whole school attended the usual Trafalgar Day meeting on the previous night. The Lady Principal reported that the number on the roll for this month was 219 — 65 seniors, 146 juniors, and 8 paying pupils. The numbers for the same month in 1914 *were 201; in 1913, 187; in 1912, 175; and in 1911, 204. Since last month three girls had left. Mr Webb was appointed to preside at the break-up ceremony at the boys' school, and Mr Stephens at the girls' school.
