UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

Tbe annual meeting of the Otago UniTeneity Council, held yesterday afternoon, ■was attended by tho Chancellor (the Rev. A. Cameron), Messrs Walker, Eudey, Israel, i MorreU, Roberts, Rose. Sidey, tho Hon. T. Mao Gibbon, Drs Churoh, Benham, and Malcolm. The Finance Committee reported having considered the investment of moneys in the New Zealand Government war loan at 4j> per cent, and had resolved to invest therein for 25 years £150 from the scholarship and prize fund account, and £60, being capital lying in tho general current account. It was further resolved that application should be made direct to tho Government for the Auditor-general had written stating **££?, in view of the explanation ro students , hospital fees given him by Dr Ferguson, ho did not propose to pursue the matter further. Hβ pointed out, .however, that, if the fees were handed over to tho Hospital Board as a this must be done unconditionally, otherwise a subsidy could not be paid.—This letter had been noted. Tho manager, Bank of Now Zealand, had written asking instructions with reference to £100 debentures falling due on January, 1916. Tho debentures might be renewed at 4£ per cent, to January 1, 1921, or converted into 4£ per cent debentures under "Tho Finance Act, 1915."—1t had been resolved to convert into debentures as above specified, with a currency of 25 years.—Adopted. Tho Works Committee reported that Briscoe and Co.'s account for sinks indented for the Medical School had been reduoed v to £269 14s. The Town Clerk had written on October 23 forwarding a plan of tho proposed scheme for beautifying the Castle 6treet reserve, and asking if_ the council •would pay one-fourth of the estimated costviz., £20. —It had been resolved to recommend the council to approve of the plans, with tho exception of the proposed erection of a tramway shelter on the property; also, to recommend the payment of £20— Adopted. In connection with the conduct of Professor Wators's classes dwring his absence on active service, Professor Park reported that ho had had a conversation with Professor Waters before he left in reference to making suitable provision for tho conduct of the classes. Tho council was recommended to allow Professor Park to carry on Professor Waters's work, and to receive half the remuneration formerly, paid to Professor Waters. Further, that the abovo arrangement come into force on November I.—Consideration held over. Dr Roberts wrote stating that, due to the transition stage in the arrangement of medical terms, it was necessary for him to conduct this term a special class in practical pathology. Hβ recommended that C. R. S. Roberts, \the only student available, be appointed demonstrator at an honorarium of £5, and suggested that the council consider giving himself additional remuneration for the work involved. —It was resolved that a Btudent demonstrator be appointed, ae requested, the question of additional remuneration being referred to the Finance Committee to act. The Chairman of the Professorial Board recommended that scholarships' and. prizes be granted as follow:—Macandrew Scholarship, J. G. Imlay; Sir Georgo Grey Scholarship, A. M. Rhinesmith; .Beverly Scholar (advanced physics), J. W. Hinton; Stuart prize poem, EL A. Saunders; Ulrich Memorial Medal, G. E. Hyde; Parker Memorial prize, E. E. Anderson.' Nominated for Rhodes Scholarship, James G. Anderson.—Agreed

to. The Chairman of the Professorial Board recommended granting a diploma of aseooiateship in metallurgy to A. E. Horn, and a certificate of land and mine surveyor to Robert Bulman.—Agreed to.
