CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following are summaries of the committees' reports to be submitted at Wednesday evening's meeting of the City Council: The Library Committee reports bavins received the resignation of Miss E. Turabull, senior assistant at the library. _ A new junior assistant will now be required, and applications for the 2 x>s ''i° n have been invited, receivable up till noon on Wednesday, November 17. Tenders have been invited, receivable at the meeting of the, council, for the supply and delivery of newspapers, periodical/?, and magazines for the period commencing on April 1, 1916, and ending on March 31, 1918. In yie_w of the union of the Boroughs of Morn ington and Maori Hill with the city on January 1 next, it will be necessary to arrange for a new issue of readers' ticket." for the lending libraries. The city engineer has been instructed as under:—Record for consideration with tho allocation for next year the matter of providing a vote for the erection of two seats in Heriot row, above Elder street; give necessary attention to the condition oi Ayr street, Roslyn Ward; replace the exist ing culvert near Mrs M'Bride's property at the corner of Pacific street and Town Belt road with a 12in pipe, and report the cost of raising the footpath for consideration with next year's allocations. The General Committao recommends that authority bo granted to procure and fit up an additional slipper bath in the baths building. There is only one of these baths installed at present, and two >are required to meet the demand. Tenders for the lease of the Turkish baths have been invited by public advertisement, receivable up till noon on Wednesday, December 14, 1915. The lease will be for a period of three years. The Electric Power and Lighting Committee _ recommends that the tender of tho National .Electrical and Engineering Company (Ltd.) for the supply and delivery of one 500-kw 3000-volt regulator for the converter station for the sum of (approximately) £635, be accepted, and that authority be granted to purchase a motor car for the use of the department generally, particularly to enable the engineers to get to and return from Waipori, Halfway Bush, and other widely-separated points of the system with the least possible loss of time. It is pre posed to bring the new schedule of rates adopted by the council at its last meeting into operation on January 1, 1916. This will permit of notice being given to all consumers who will be affected by the alterations.

The Tramways Committee reports that the traffic returns for the tramways for the fortnight ended October 30, 1915, ,as compared with the corresponding period for last year, are as follow: -1915: Receipts, £2782 7s 9d ; mileage, 49,473 miles. 1914: Receipts, £2763 13s lid; mileage, 49,054 miles. The Finance Committee recommends that, with regard to the matter of the suggested reduction in the charge for conveniences, in view of the heavy expenditure which the water department may shortly be committed to in connection with the construction of tho Lee Stream works and purchase of land, no alteration be made to the charge in question. It has been agreed that the council should bear all expenses incurred in connection with any civic or patriotic reception or farewell. Accounts will, in the first place, be paid by the Patriotic Association, and the council will reimburse that body in the total amount expended on each function. In response to. an application from tho lieutenant-colonel commanding the 3rd and 4th Battalions, Eirl of Liverpool's Own New Zealand Rifle Brigade, authority has been granted to donate the sum of £5 5s towards a fund being raised for the pur-' chase of instruments for three bands for the Rifle Brigade. Accounts totallW £16,495 have been dealt with. The Water and Reserves Committees' reports contain nothing of importance. 4
