FOR THE SICK AND WOUNDED.

HEW ZEALAKDERS TINDER HOSPITAL TREATMENT.

AJS" APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC

In a letter which ire published from him last week Mr L W. Raymond, formerly of Invercargill, now in England, chairman of the Hospitality Committee of the New Zealand War Association in England, wrote: There are dose on 2000 sick and wounded in England. The members of the various committees under the executive aro determined to dispense necessities and comforts in no niggardly manner. The boys are far from home, and must be looked after, wherever the money ,may come from. Thi3 is the very least that can be done for them. The resources are almost dried up on this side. Tho dominion Go vernment, or the people independently, would, I am confident, remit £10,000 occasionally if they oould but see how carefully all moneys are expended, and how Urgently necessary, is the outlay. Remember, the back pay is never a large sum. The total each man can draw after leaving hospital is 2s per day—hardly sufficient to meet 'bus expenditure. _ The reliable and comforfctble boarding-houses charge 30s per week. The allowance is wholly inadequate. Knowing the _ gene- - • rosity of the people in the dominion, I . hope if any appeal be made that they will feel safe in responding, knowing how the money is being applied. Since Mr Raymond's letter was printed % ns, the Minister of Defence has invited from the public further contributions for the purchase of comforts for sick and ■wounded New Zealanders in England and elsewhere. He states that he has no funds in hand for that purpose at the present time, though there is still a balance in the hands of the High Commissioner. The money which he invites the public to subscribe is used to buy cigarettes, tobacco, stationery, shading gear, etc., over and above the Government's provisions. We "frail be pleased ..to acknowledge the I- ■ receipt of any subscriptions whidh may be sent to us for this fund, which may be described as the Invalid Soldiers' Gift ' '/Fund'.
