THE DOMINIONS
CANADIAN TROOPS. AN AUSTRALIAN TRIBUTE. SYDNEY, MaTch 22. . Mr Harry Gullett, Australian press representative with the British headquarters in Franco, cables that he has ivisited the Canadian trenches. The Canadians are very proud of being the first of the dominion troops to fight for England. During his visit his experience showed that the reputation of the overseas troops is quite ssife in the Canadians' keeping. They have shown a dash and steadiness unsurpassed by any of the regular troops. The British hold the lowest-lying and wettest portion of the whole -western line. The Canadians, accustomed to making the best of harsh winter conditions, have proved themselves masters in contriving subterranean comforts. In the Canadian trenches Mr Gullett frequently heard happy soldiers snoring loudly wliile their mates kept watch, unconscious of the crack of rifles from the enemy's line only 200 yards away. When the Australians come to Europe they will find that the .Canadians have cet the standard high. The careless, holiday spirit, which was too . much" in evidence while the force were training in England, disappeared completely when they came face to face with the uncompromising realities of the campaign. GERMAN SOUTH-WEST AFRICA. PRISONERS AND GUNS CAPTURED. PRETORIA, March 21. General Botha captured 200 prisoners and two field guns on March 20. UNION TROOPS OCCUPY POSITIONS. CAPETOWN, March 21. Official : British troops ha.ve occupied Schuetdrift, Nebas, Ukumas, and five other localities in the southern corner of German South-west Africa.
