Wo aro informed that in consequence of his expected long absence from the dominion, Sir James Mills has resigned his seat on the board of the National Insurance Company, and that Mr W. Downio Stewart has been elected to fill the vacancy. Dr Horton. who has been a Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge, has (telegraphs our Wellington correspondent) been appointed to'the important position of professor of physics at the Royal Holloway Collego. Egham (Surrey). Thie college has recently become part of the London Universitv. Dr Horton is married to a daughter of "Mr J. E. Fulton, the well-known civil engineer. Previous to the oommencrment of the business at the , St. Kilda Council last night a resolution of condolence was passed to ox-Counciilor T. Ashton who recentlv was bereft of his father. .. , Mi" Alexander Jameson, national secretary of tho Young Men's Christian Associations of New Zealand, arrived by the second express from the north last evening. He will bo in Dunediin until Thursday, after which he visite the associations at Milton and Invercargill. Mr Jameson will return to Dunediii towards the end of the month. A Christchurch message announces the death of Lieutenant Alfred Noakes, who ii.is been a resident of tho dominion for the last eight years. The previous 20 years he was in South Africa, and served in the Bcchuanaland ownjjaign and South African ■war. Ho held the King's and Queen's medaJs. Captain A. W. Macartmir Onslow, who has boon instructor in mounted duties in the Canterbury military district of New Zealand (says the Sydney Sun) intends spending a few weeks in Sydney before returning to England. A cable message notifies that Sir Samuel Way, Chief Justice of South Australia, has undergone an operation in Sydney, his left arm boinjj amputated at tho shoulder. The well-known Timarti auctioneer, Mr John Stronach, to tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Ltd.) was, on Saturday, presented by his confreres in busino&s with a handsome inscribed silver-mounted walkingstick as a token of esteem. Mrs Sltronaeh was n \en the recipient of a Morris chair.
The death occurred on .Saturday at 'Maungatua of Mr John Brow.n, who Tvag born Libnarkshire. He was of a vory retiring and industrious disposition, and an earnest member o( the Presbyterian Church. There are 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildrcn.
