OLD FOLKS ENTERTAINED
. A party of about 30 members from the Otago Early Settlers' Lady Descendants' Club proceeded to the Benevolent Institution on Monday evening to give the inmates a concert Mrs Dey (president) wae in charge, and before the musical programme was commenced, appropriately addressed those present. The programme, ■which was fairly lengthy, was rendered more eo by the repeated, encores demanded by the audience. " Boys of the King," which was tunefully eung by Master Sydney Swift, who was equally successful in his encore number, "Only a Baby Small." Mrs Rae gave on old favourite, "My Irish Molly." Mr Simm played a very acceptable pianoforte eolo, and Miss Ina Blackwood sang "What Can I Do for England?" Mr A. Edwards gave a splendid rendering of "The Wreck" and, in'response to an encore, snng "Sleep, Sailor Sleep." Master Douglas Swift delighted the audience with an account of " When Father Carves the Duok/' and had to give "Circle Day" in addition. Other items wore: "Tho Old Folks at Home," sung by Mrs Howell; " Tho Englishman," sung by Mr J. Patton; recitations—"Bill Smith" and " ±he Port of Ships" (encore), by Master Sydney Swift; "Apart," sung by Mrs Dcy; duet, "Life's Dream is O'or," by Meeers Patton and Simm; song, "Invitation," by Mrs Rae; and a recitation, "Tho Freckle-faced Girl," by Miss Morris. Mr Edwards also sang a comic song, and Mr W. Irwin was encored for his item. " Ship's Tales" and responded -with " There's a Land," in which he was also heard to advantage. Tho programme was, brought to an end. by a recitation, " Whooping ' given by Master Douglas Swift by special request of the audience. The function was closed by tho handing round of supper by tho visitors, during which Mr Patton voiced the regret of tho club at the retirement from tho institution -of Mr Sinclair, not only because of the kindnees and courtesy he had always extended to club visitors, but because of his loss to the old people, to whom he had proved a kind and capable manager.
